As a result of getting caught to the Dutch trap, the Portuguese had to suffer a lot of losses. With the intention of destroying the balance soldiers, the Dutch sent a huge army to the other side of the Bentara river. They got divided into three parts. One part was placed around the upper part of the river to attract the Portuguese soldiers there.
A second section was stationed in Kaluwamodara. The third section blocked the road to stop the Portuguese from going to Kalutara. Along with all this, another section of the army who was assigned with the task of attacking the camp there, started the attack.
When the attack began, the Portuguese army in Kaluwamodara returned. They were caught amidst the Dutch soldiers who were on guard there. Then followed a serious battle. The Dutch forces were three times larger in number than the Portuguese and thus the Portuguese had to suffer immense losses.
Suffering all these difficulties, the Portuguese somehow escaped to Kalutara. Though the Dutch followed them, nothing serious took place and they had to return. They started repairing the fort and stationed an army regiment there. The Portuguese also tightened their security there.
Meanwhile, King Rajasinghe got to know from the Dutch, that the Portuguese army returned from Aluthgama. He also heard that Pigera, of whom he was dead scared had not been commanding the army there. At this time, there was a Portuguese army stationed in Malwana and Pitigaldeniya.
