Scrabble in August
View(s):Scrabble lovers are in for a treat when the Sri Lanka Scrabble League hosts its two landmark championships in August. The month will kick off with the All Island Age Group Scrabble Championship to be held at Lyceum International School Wattala on Saturday, August 5. This will be a whole day event with students in the age groups of under 13 and under 18 taking part.
Usually widely attended with more than 250 junior players vying for the championships in their respective age groups, this is an open tournament meant for all and does not require membership of the League.
The tournament brings together children from all parts of the island who are players in their respective school scrabble clubs and teams. It is a good opportunity for young players to meet and interact with other young players of their own age and gain much experience and knowledge. Phoenix Industries is the principal sponsor of the event.
Tournaments such as this have successfully produced many world class scrabble players for Sri Lanka. In 2015 and 2016 the national Under 18 team emerged world champions at the World Youth Scrabble Championships conducted by the World English Language Scrabble Players Association (WESPA), a tournament where the best players of each country are represented. Several individual awards were also secured by the young players, including second, third and eighth places in the world.
Scrabble, an astute game of strategy, word power and analytical skills, is not just for the young. It is also played and enjoyed by many adults. The National Scrabble Championship, an open event will be conducted at the Women’s International Club at Guildford Crescent on August 12 and 13.
More details of these tournaments can be found at www.scrabble.lk. The closing date for registrations is July 31. The principal sponsor of the Sri Lanka Scrabble League is Phoenix Industries Limited.
