Giving their regards to Broadway
‘To Broadway with love’ will be presented by the Colombo Tea Traders Association at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel on August 13.
This week we spoke to Soundarie David, who will be a part of the show. “We are fortunate to have with us as the main artists, Adam Jon and Karen Usha Grey, both of whom have much to offer our Sri Lankan audiences,” Soundarie tells us. She adds with a lot of entertainment happening in Sri Lanka these days, it would be refreshing to hear some new voices.
Aside from the talented pair, ‘Soul Sounds’, will also be performing a Broadway Medley, we find out. They will be joined by ‘Soul’ which is Soundarie’s instrumental group. The newly formed group hope to showcase some of their original music. Mr Ravibandu Vidyapathy will be performing alongside them on traditional drums.
Just like it’s title, the concert will feature a range of Broadway musical favourites both old and new. “From ‘Wicked’ to ‘My Fair Lady’ I think the audience is in for some good music…so be there to know the rest,” Soundarie says.
Soundarie herself is looking forward to working with the two soloists. She explains that the pair come with a lot of experience. Aside from this its been a while since there has been a Broadway music themed show. This is why ‘To Broadway with love’, will certainly be a concert for all Broadway music lovers.
Soundarie personally feels that music cuts through all barriers. “So whether you are old or young, a lover of broadway musicals, or just a classical music fan, if you love good music, and you feel music can communicate to you, then this show will resonate with you.”
The Mirror also spoke to Adam and Karen, who are currently in the process of making their final preparations for the show.
The show will be Adam’s first time taking on a Sri Lankan stage and he tells us, he’s looking forward to it. Adam adds that the warm tropical weather, the delicious food and Sri Lankan hospitality are also on the list of things he hopes to experience here.
Karen’s forte has always been the operatic genre. But she transcends her classical training and brings versatility to the genres of gospel, semi-classical and contemporary styles. “As a performer in today’s word, it is important that I cater to a wider audience while preserving my originality,” she tells us adding that this is the side, she wishes to showcasein Sri Lanka. Indeed the best is yet to come on Sunday August 13. Tickets for the show are priced at Rs. 4500 and 5000. They are available at the Cinnamon Grand.
