Lankan Universities shine at Inter-Medical School Physiology Quiz in Malaysia
View(s):While the Faculty of Medicine, Colombo, rose to victory becoming the World Champions and winning the prestigious Prof. A. Raman Challenge Trophy at the 15th Inter-Medical School Physiology Quiz (IMSPQ) 2017 held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on August 16 and 17, two more teams from Sri Lanka clinched the 3rd and 5th places.
The 3rd and 5th places were secured by Medical Faculty teams from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura and the University of Kelaniya.
One hundred and three teams from 22 countries including the United Kingdom (UK), Japan, Australia, Singapore, China and Thailand competed for the Prof. A. Raman Challenge Trophy, with Sri Lanka competing against powerful teams from the National University of Singapore, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, the Charles Darwin and Flinders Universities of Australia and the University of Bristol, UK. More than 460 medical students and 120 lecturers participated in the quiz.
The Champions from the Colombo Medical Faculty were Poorni Fernando, Sathee Hewakuruppu, Chamath Jayakody, Supun Prabhashwara and Pamodh Yasawardene while the Second Runners-up from the Sri Jayewardenepura Medical Faculty were Thilini Kulasinghe, Dulmini De Silva, Raveesha Wanigasuriya, Chamodi Nissanka and Dewage Nisansala Tharangi. The Kelaniya Medical Faculty team which came 5th consisted of V.T. Martin, S.H. Dissanayake, F.N.M. Nasar, J.R.P. Samarathunga and J.A.P.H. Jayasinghe.
Meanwhile, the three-member team from the Jaffna Faculty of Medicine which came up to the quarter finals included Shanthanaa Vasanthakumar, Thakshana Sangaradas and Gnanapragasam Vaikunthan.
IMSPQ honours the late Prof. Raman, the first Malaysian Professor of Physiology and Head of Department of Physiology of Malaysia’s oldest university, University of Malaya.
It is a key event in the physiology academic calendar that enables and inspires both students and teachers to enjoy this basic science which forms the backbone of medicine. The quiz has become a model for the national physiological societies of many countries to achieve the goals of enhancing the learning and teaching of physiology.
