Kiriella Police said they were waiting for a report from the Water Resources Board (WRB) to ascertain the degree of pollution of the Kalu Ganga due to an oil leak from a toppled Ceylon Petroleum Corporation fuel bowser.

A senior official of Kiriella Police said that the WRB was still gauging the pollution and the damage to the river. He added that Naval personnel attached to the Sri Lanka Coast Guard and Community Police helped contain the oil seepage into the river from the overturned bowser.

The official said that the bowser had been removed, and the Coast Guard was cleaning up the oil spill, while investigations are conducted by the WRB. Clean up operations are carried out by a team comprising two officers and 28 sailors to avoid further contamination of the river.

The fuel bowser had toppled in the early hours of Friday when it was traveling at high speed in an area which had tight bends.

“The driver and assistant were admitted to the Horana Hospital and are undergoing treatment,” he said. The police will take legal action against them for negligence.
