Smugglers nabbed transporting pregnancy terminating tablets
View(s):The Wanatha Villuwa police are interrogating three persons who were aprehended smuggling a large stock of tablets including drugs used for early termination of pregnancy
The Puttalam Acting Magistrate Mohamed Iqbal extended the suspects period of detention until Tuesday so police could complete their investigations.
On Friday the Magistrate ordered police to question the men believed to have transported the drugs illicitly on a fishing boat from India to Mannar and subsequently transported the stock of drugs along the Puttalam canal.
The detection was made while the goods were being loaded into a luxury van. The suspects were aged 45, 38 and 35 years old.
The detection was made following a tip-off received by OIC (Crimes), R.K.K.Piyaratne of the Wanantha Villuwa police station. He added the goods packed in four large boxes and included Tremadol, a Contra Kit which is used for pregnancy termination and tranax. It also included 240,000 tablets, all of which are dangerous if used without medical advice.
None of the aforementioned drugs are available for sale at private pharmacies in Sri Lanka. They can only be obtained at the State Pharmaceutical Corporation outlets with a doctor’s prescription.
