Marapana calls on Modi on first overseas trip as FM

Foreign Affairs Minister Tilak Marapana called on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking his first overseas visit after assuming office. Prime Minister Modi said that he wanted to see the region develop and that Sri Lanka has a special place in relations with India, Foreign Minstry sources said. The Premier also said that India was keen on expediting development projects undertaken.
Earlier Mr Marapana met his Indian counterpart Sushma Swaraj.

“The two sides discussed the entire gamut of bilateral relations and ways to further deepen the historically close and friendly relations between the two countries. The External Affairs Minister also hosted a lunch in honour of the visiting dignitary,” the Indian External Affairs Ministry said in a statement after Mr. Marapana met Ms Swaraj.

Sri Lanka’s Foreign Ministry Secretary Prasad Kariyawasam accompanied the minister.
