St. Benedict’s and Walala Ratnayake in the lead
Defending champions of the All Island Schools Relay Champions in the respective boy’s and girl’s categories St Benedict’s Kotahena and A. Ratnayake MMV Walala took the lead at the end of the second day’s proceedings of All Island Relay Championship which is in progress at the Duraiappah Stadium in Jaffna.
However, both schools are holding on to a slender lead. In the boys category, St Benedict’s has accumulated 30 points while second placed Maris Stella Negombo is close behind on 29 points. They are followed by Trinity (20), A. Ratnayake MMV Walala (20), St Peter’s Colombo (19), Rahula Matara (15) and St Joseph Vaz Wennappuwa (11).
In the girl’s category A. Ratnayake MMV Walala has secured 22 points with Sir John Kotalawala MV Kurunegala two points behind on 20. The duo is followed by Sumana BV Ratnapura (16), Janadhipathi BV Nawala (13), Ave Maria Convent Negombo (13), Dharmapala Vidyalaya (12), Welimada Central (12), Swarnamali Girls College Kandy (12), Mahamaya BV Kandy (11) and Ambagamuwa (10).
The second day’s proceedings saw A. Ratnayake MMV Walala having a field day as they made a clean sweep by winning all the five finals -two in the boy’s and three in girl’s including the medley relay.
Meanwhile the boy’s category leaders St Benedict’s and Sir John Kotalawala MMV Kurunegala were the only two other schools to achieve a double in the boy’s and girl’s categories with St Benedict’s winning the U16 – 4x100m and the Boy’s U18 – 4x100m while Sir John Kotalawala MMV Kurunegala secured first slots in the Girl’s U16 – 4x100m and Girls U18 – 4x100m events.
The other schools to secure wins in the boy’s category were Trinity, St. Peter’s and Maris Stella while Ave Maria Convent Negombo, Janadhipathi BV Nawala and Ambagamuwa Central in the girl’s category.
The All Island Schools Relay Championship conducted by the Minister of Education and sponsored by Nestle Lanka Ltd is being held in the northern district for the first time with the participation of over 5000 athletes comprising of 164 schools in the boy’s category and 138 schools in the girl’s category.
The championship will come to an end today with 24 finals scheduled to be held.
The chief guest at the closing ceremony will be C.V. Vigneshwaran, Chief Minister Northern Province while Sunil Hettiarachchi, Secretary Minister of Education will grace the occasion as the guest of honour.
