Cabinet approved Women & Child Affairs Minister Chandrani Bandara’s proposal to strengthen the mechanism to implement the Convention on Children’s Rights, said Cabinet spokesman Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara. He explained that the Govt intends to expand the role and structure of Steering Committees which operate under Article 40 of the Convention of the Rights of the Child.

“The strengthening mechanism will also effect National and Regional Committees established in 2000,” he said. Sri Lanka signed the Convention in 1991 and consequently, the Govt is bound to protect Children’s Rights. The Convention is implemented by the Children’s Secretariat, National Child Protection Authority and Department of Probation & Child Care Services.
