TWO EXTRA LAPS
View(s):There is this story that a flag waver at a key motorsport event forgot to wave the flag when the top most riders were speeding ahead during the last lap of a race. The reason why he forgot to wave the flag was that he was in conversation with an assistant! The end result was that the two leading riders had to do two extra laps to determine the winner!
CEO STAYED AWAY
Last week the Education Department called in a powerful forum to discuss ways of resurrecting the flagging junior cricket in the country – which invariably is the cradle for national cricket. An invitation was forwarded even to the Chief Executive Officer at SLC, but, apparently he stayed away, on someone’s deliberation.
If it is really so …… what is this huge masquerade about being concerned for the game of cricket which is going through turbulent times right now!
ANOTHER MASQUERADE!!
Last week there was a meeting held at the premises of a leading club in Colombo seven? The purpose was to introduce the pending club cricket season. However, the stakeholders were up in arms about the cutting down of the super-tournament from four days to three days.
The tempers were rising and the poor tournament committee chairman of the SLC got cornered. There he had to admit that all this was done to the whim of one individual. Some feel this individual has already done irreparable damage to cricket and its image big time.
THIS IS YET ANOTHER ACHIEVEMENT
The Bloomfield hunt is still on. Batsman Nipun Karunanayake who scored during the Premier League season and also scored a thousand runs, turning out for one the Minor Counties in England along with left arm leg spinner Malith Mahela de Silva, who was the second highest wicket taker in the Premier League tournament, has not been invited to train with the squad of forty players who were picked recently. The reason …. Someone voted against someone during the last club elections.
HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF
Two officials of a leading sport are facing a challenge in the law courts to the effect that they have played out Rs. 30 million from the sport’s coffers. This same pair faced a similar situation some years back when under another president they were accused of playing out millions of dollars. It looks as if history has a habit of repeating itself. This time however, the dollars have turned into rupees!
REBUILDING PROCESS
This skipper came out of the field lambasting the officials saying that it was due to their doings that the local team had to eat ‘parippu’. But it was another story that this skipper related at a press conference where he said that things change with time and tide and the team is now undergoing a re-building process!
