Moves to popularise Agriculture, Environment Studies at National exams
View(s):The Ministry of Education (MoE) is training teachers and compiling manuals to encourage students to follow Agriculture as a subject at National exams. To upgrade students’ competence, the MoE is training teachers in the provinces in Agriculture and Food Technology subjects for the GCE (O/L).
Around 181 GCE (O/L) teachers are being trained to teach Hydrology, Atmospheric, Soil and Ground Coverings in keeping with the International Programme of the Global Learning & Observation to benefit the environment. Also, around 100 officers of Agricultural Studies are being trained on the GCE (A/L) syllabus.
Further, the MoE will introduce a manual on ‘Green Schools’ to create awareness among schoolchildren on the environment, energy, water and waste management, to encourage students to follow Agriculture as a subject. Other manuals will include remedies to improve results at the GCE (O/L) Agricultural subjects and job opportunities available for higher education and employment will be made available, the MoE Annual Report 2016 said.
The classroom environment will be made attractive by making learning attractive and a pleasing experience for the students. The step, it is believed, will make subjects easy to understand, and will direct students towards active learning. In addition, quiz competitions, exhibitions, establishing school green farms and managing solid waste are some of the activities planned to boost the programme.
