New subjects for the GCE Advanced Level exam
View(s):New subjects have been introduced for the Advanced Level, under the 13-year compulsory education programme to be implemented as a pilot project from next month, and is expected to cover the entire education system from 2019, said the Ministry of Education (MoE).
The new subject stream, called Vocational stream, will comprise two main components namely, General and Applied.
There will be 9 main subjects under the General Component namely, First Language (Sinhala/Tamil), Applied English & Communication Skills Development, Aesthetic Appreciation and related Skills, Information & Communication Technical Skills, Citizenship related Skills, Health & Life Skills, Entrepreneurship Skills, Sports & Co-curricular activities and Career Guidance & Counseling Skills.
It is compulsory for all Vocational stream students to follow the above subjects during the first 6 months of their 2-year study period. After which they can select 1 of the following 26 subjects, for the remaining 18 months. They are, Child Psychology & Care, Health & Social Care, Physical Education & Sports, Performing Arts, Event Management, Arts & Crafts, Interior Designing, Fashion Designing, Graphic Designing, Art & Designing, Landscaping, Applied Horticultural Studies, Livestock Product Studies, Food Processing Studies, Aquatic Resources Studies, Plantation Product Studies, Construction Studies, Automobile Studies, Electrical & Electronic Studies, Textile & Apparel Studies, Metal Fabrication Studies, Aluminium Fabrication Studies, Software Development, Web Development, Tourism, Hospitality & Environmental Studies.
