Rs 57m to educate 2,885 children of migrant workers
View(s):Around Rs 57 million has been allocated this year for scholarships for 2,885 children of migrant workers, said Minister of Foreign Employment Thalatha Athukorala.This year the Scholarship programme will commence on a District level in November.
Accordingly, 869 students who have passed the Grade 5 Scholarship exam will receive Rs 15,000 each, 1,652 students who have passed the GCE Ordinary Level exam will receive Rs 20,000 each, and 364 students selected for university admission in 2017, will receive Rs 30,000 each.
Gampaha District had the highest number of students of 307, while the Eastern Province with 691 had the highest scholarship recipients among the Provinces.
The scholarship programme started in 1996, is a welfare service and an aide towards the education of children of migrant workers who are registered with the Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau.
