Eric Vanshel Boin of Spain annex the boy’s title
Ukrainian Eric Vanshel Boin, who is based in Spain, annexed the Boy’s title at the ITR Junior tournament worked off at the SLTA counts. He beat Sri Lankan Avindra Perera 6-4, 6-2 in a match that didn’t excite and enthuse all the way.
Eric is vastly more experienced and has been weaned on clay. However, he felt that this particular count was a bit grainy. An all round player who likes to play the service and hockey game, he adapted to his opponent very well. In short, he played smart tennis.
Avindra was not consistent all round, and failed to win the important points. He was down 1-4 in the first set, but through sheer determination he was able to equalize at 4 all. However, Eric pulled off the last two games to take the opening set 6-4
Avindra failed to maintain the same level of Performance in the second set. As Eric confessed, both players were pretty tired. He put it past Japanese Ranjiro Shinuizee in the semis 6-3, 6-3, while Eric waltzed past Indians CH Arjun 6-3, 6-1
Towards the end, Avindra seemed to advance to the net without playing a deep approach shot. The rather Ukrainian lobbed him easily. The end came when the Sri Lankan netted a back hand volley.
The girls’ singles final that pitted Japans Koharu Niimi against Chinese Taipei’s Yu Chin Tsai went the distance. The Taipei lass took the first set 6-2. Kohans struck back at once to take the second by the same Margin.
Yu Chin short into a 3-0 lead in final set. But this Japanese, who showed tremendous fighting qualities, came back to equalise, and then lead 5-3. The Taipei girl played stubborn tennis to equalise at 5-all. However, the Japanese left hander, made use of a very good first service to pile on their points.However, she was let down by a weak backhands.
On a slightly Jarring note, the Taipei girl who inspired herself slightly when she slipped and fell, attended to her injury, herself. Ball-pickers were also conspicuous by their absence. Being an inter national tournament, one felt that the SLTA should have looked into these matters before hands.
