Rulers of the waters, Sri Lanka Navy proved their might at the 32nd Sri Lanka National Rowing Championship, clinching the overall title on the closing day of the three-day event at the Diyawanna Rowing Centre in Rajagiriya yesterday. The Navy oarsmen and oarswomen maintained an overwhelming performance through the three days and rightfully claimed what was theirs’ in front of a massive crowd.

The Navy men claimed the Jerry Silva Trophy in the Open category with a tally of three Gold medals while Sri Lanka Army women claimed the Deva Henry Trophy of the same category with two Gold medals.

In the Under-18 category, Royal College went on to become the best crew and claim the Major Percy Fernando Trophy as Sri Lanka Navy women claimed the J.M. Perera Trophy for their performance.

Ananda College clinched the Ernie Wijesinghe Trophy for becoming the best performers in the Men’s Under-18 category. They won two Gold medals. The Rohan Fernando Trophy also known as the Flippers Trophy, was won by Ladies’ College who claimed two Golds and Silvers each.

Culminating the three-day event were two exhibition races in Eights, which happened for the very first time on the 2000metre course of Diyawanna waters. The girls’ race was won by Musaeus College, who finished way ahead of Ladies’ College and Bishops College. The boy’s race was a virtual Royal-Thomian battle with the third team, the Kothalawala Defence University failing to maneuver their gigantic boat. Royal won the race by a clear margin over the Thomians. The three-day event was organised and conducted by the Amateur Rowing Association of Sri Lanka.
