Govt. spends Rs 4,000m for sanitation and supply of water to schools
The Govt, in its School development programme- ‘Nearest School the Best School’ – has spent Rs 4,000 million for sanitation and the supply of water to all schools islandwide, in 2016.
The Ministry of Education Annual Report 2016 states that, “Of the 3,772 schools identified for the provision of toilets, 3,560 schools received toilets last year, with 1,677 schools sans water, received water supply.
Further, an allocation of Rs 102.5 million was utilised to improve facilities for Science Education in 23 estate schools in the Sabragamuwa, Uva and Central Provinces.An allocation of Rs 150 million was utilised to construct 17 Dental Clinics and renovate 99 existing Clinics.
Another allocation of Rs 1,300 million was utilised to supply Electricity to several schools sans Power, through the National Grid and Solar Power projects.
Furthermore, an islandwide programme to develop 3,328 Primary Schools is already in progress, with 190 single-storied buildings and 175 two-storied buildings constructed, with 2,381 buildings renovated. - CC
