S. de S. Jayasinghe Maha Vidyalaya Dehiwala beat S. Thomas’ Prep School by 19-7 to win the Milo Inter-School Under-14 Division II 10-a-side Rugby Tournament last weekend. The two-day tournament was held at the Public ground in Ruwanwella on September 23 and 24.

Shield Champions -- St.Joseph's, Anuradapura

S. de S. Jayasinghe MV had a fine run-up to the final and they ended up being the only unbeaten side of the two-day competition. In the final they scored from three tries and two conversions while conceding a converted try, in one of the rather tested games played throughout the tournament.
In the Cup semi-finals, S. de S. Jayasinghe MV thrashed Asoka Vidyalaya by 33-0 while St. Thomas’ Prep defeated Rahula College Katugastota handsomely by 29-7.

In the Cup quarter-finals the eventual winners easily defeated Sri Sumangala College by 31-0 after finishing off with three wins in the group stage on the first day. They competed under Group ‘C’ and beat Wickramabahu MV Gampola (42-0), Kegalu Vidyalaya (36-0) and St. Luke’s College Ratnapura (34-0) without conceding a single point. The only time they were outsmarted was by the losing finalists St. Thomas’ Prep, who managed to score a converted try. In total they scored 195 points and conceded just seven points from their total campaign. Kavishka Madushan of S. de S. Jayasinghe MV was adjudged the Best Player of the Tournament.

Devapathiraja College Rathgama clinched the Plate championship beating Sarasavi Uyana Maha Vidyalaya by 35-14 in the final. Devapathiraja collected their points through five converted tries while Sarasavi Uyana scored two converted tries for their points. In the semi-finals Devapathiraja thrashed Sri Sumangala College Panadura by 35-0 while Sarasavi Uyana edged out Presidents College Maharagama by 19-14 to reach the final.

Best Player, Kaveshka Madushan of S. de.S.Jayasinghe MV

Dutugemunu Maha Vidyalaya Buttala kept their momentum on to record a nerve-cracking 26-21 win against D.B. Welagedara Maha Vidyalaya Kurunegala, to snatch the Bowl championship. D.B. Welagedara MV recorded a smashing 31-0 win against Vidura College while Dutugemunu MV beat Mahanama College Kandy by 12-0 in the semi-finals.

In the Shield championship final St. Joseph’s College Anuradhapura recorded an absorbing 12-7 win against Dudley Senanayake College to emerge victorious. In the semi-finals St. Joseph’s outsmarted Mahanama Navodya MV Panadura by 34-0 while Dudley Senanayake had a easy outing against St. Luke’s College Ratnapura and won the game by 26-5.

The tournament was organised and conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Association with the sponsorship of Nestle Lanka’s Milo.
