The Negombo Chief Magistrate ordered the Acting Officer In Charge (OIC) Crimes of the Divulapitiya Police to be produced in court on Tuesday for an identification parade in connection with the death of a suspect who allegedly died after being tortured by police.

The 50-year-old victim had been in remanded custody at the Negombo Prison after being arrested by the Divulapitiya Police. He was remanded till October 10 after being produced before the Minuwangoda Magistrate in connection with an alleged robbery. However, he had fallen ill on October 4 and was admitted to hospital, where he later died. A post-mortem examination revealed that death was caused by multiple injuries to the body.

Police later arrested Acting OIC Crimes of the Divulapitiya Police, Saman Priyanka in connection with the incident. Several other officers at the station have already been transferred out to the Peliyagoda Police as investigations continue.
