Passengers in a Colombo bound train on the southern coastal line were in for a rude shock when railway workers loaded into a passenger compartment a headless body of a person who had committed suicide.  The incident took place around 3pm some 300 metres from the Kollupitiya railway stattion. The man believed to be in his mid thirties was wearing a denim trouser and a T-shirt.

A group of railway workers with the help of civilians in the area had picked up the headless body and placed it in a compartment which had more than 50 passengers including school children. “The floor was splattered with blood and bleeding continued until the body was handed over to railways officials at the next station – Slave Island, a passenger said.

Regular railway commuters said that usually in such incidents the body was taken in the guards wagon and handed over to officials at the the next railway station.  However, a Deputy Operations Superintendent claimed that usually in such incidents bodies are placed in the guards wagon, but if the wagon is several compartments away they would place the body in the nearest compartment to avoid causing delays to other trains. “It had been closer to the office hours and our priority is to keep to the train schedule,” he added.
But passengers claimed that railway authorities should have been more considerate to the commuters.
