The Ministry of Education (MoE) will go ahead with its proposal to provide financial assistance to students undergoing economic hardships to continue their education, despite concerns raised by trade unions. “This proposed financial relief is to be included in next year’s Budget and is no way linked to the upcoming local elections, as claimed by trade unions recently,” an MoE official said.

The Education Times last week, exclusively reported that the MoE has proposed to provide the financial relief for students who do not attend school due to economic hardships and other reasons. The MoE explained the allowance will enable children to continue their education by purchasing stationery and other items required for their education. “The objective is to support their education and not provide financial benefits for their day-to-day activities,” an official explained.

He said, “However, the final decision regarding the payment rests with the Finance Ministry in preparing the Budget.” The reaction came after some unions claimed that the proposal was being made ahead of the local elections, as a ploy to ‘buy’ votes. The official explained that, a survey conducted revealed 14,000 children still remain at home, unable to complete their education. (DW)
