130th Sri Lanka Amateur tees off amidst inclement conditions
The 130th Sri Lanka Amateur Golf Championship teed-off in the midst of wet and inclement weather conditions at the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club Course, after a solemn opening ceremony at 7 a.m. yesterday.
The international team event for the Parlakimedi Trophy will be a tussle between six, two member teams from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and three Sri Lankan Teams.
The incessant rain and cold windy conditions were most challenging for the 43 participants to qualify for the match-play segment after the two qualifying rounds on Saturday and Sunday.
Individual Prizes for the Victoria Cup best Gross Score in the first round, Pin Fernando Trophy for the Best Gross Score in the 2nd Round and the Timothy De Silva Challenge Trophy for the best Gross Score aggregate over two rounds are at stake in addition to 32 spots to qualify for the Match-play, knock-out segment of the Championship commencing Monday. The Final will be on Thursday, 19th October 2017.
In really trying conditions the Sri Lanka ‘A’ Team comprising G. P. Sisira Kumara and N. Amarapadma returned an aggregate of 148 to lead India by 3 strokes going into the second round of the Parlakimedi Trophy International Challenge. Amarapadma pipped Sisira Kumara on a count-back, for the best individual Gross.
The National Flags of Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka were hoisted to the strains of the respective National Anthems. Dilhan Abhayarathne, Treasurer SLGU raised the SLGU flag, whilst Rohan Perera, Secretary Nuwara Eliya Golf Club hoisted the Host Club flag. Brig (Rtd) Tahir Zahid, Lt. Col. Md. Abdul Bari and Johnny De Saram raised the National Flags of Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka respectively.
