Royal and Trinity adjudged joint winners
Royal and Trinity were adjudged joint winners in the inaugural J.R. Jayewardene Trophy football encounter concluded at the Royal College Sports Complex yesterday.
In a scrappy game played on a muddy surface, none of the players were able to produce football of good quality. The slippery conditions underfoot and a heavy ball prevented long range lobbed passes and a run and pass game.
Royal forwards and Trinity forwards made every attempt in scoring but the conditions made things difficult. Mid way in the first half Royal forwards beat the Trinity defenders but lost a golden opportunity in scoring as the fast moving forward slipped and fell in front of the goal. The wingers of both sides never got the ball to feed the forwards in scoring.
The back divisions of Royal and Trinity along with the goal keepers had a little work to perform with both schools’ failing in their movements to find the net.
There were no scoring in both halves and Royal and Trinity were declared joint winners in this inaugural encounter.
The Under-11 and Under-13 matches ended in a nil all draw and Royal won the Under-15 and 17 clashes. Royal scored three goals while Trinity failed to score in the Under-15 match and Royal defeated Trinity 2-1 in the Under-17 clash.
