The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) will send an urgent letter to President Maithripala Sirisena tomorrow seeking a favourable solution on the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) issue. The decision to send the letter was taken after the President in his speech on Thursday at the Convocation of the Aquinas University said a solution acceptable to all parties would be announced tomorrow.

GMOA Secretary Dr. Haritha Aluthge told the Sunday Times that although the Government in the past had come up with many solutions they had failed to solve the crisis. But the GMOA viewed the President’s statement on Thursday positively, he said.

“We hope the Government will consider the advice of the Mahanayaka Theras and the Deans’ reports and take a fair decision once and for all,” he said.
Dr. Aluthge said the GMOA would insist that the Government should come up with a legally binding document preventing the SAITM from enrolling new students and awarding degrees.
