Indian High Commissioner launches new degree course at Buddhist academy convocation in Kandy
View(s):Indian High Commissioner Taranjit Sandhu, who was the chief guest at the 5th convocation ceremony of the Sri Lanka International Buddhist Academy (SIBA) in Kandy launched a new degree course, Bachelor of Technology (B.Tec) at the institute this week.
In his address, the high commissioner highlighted the importance of spiritual bonds treasured over centuries between India and Sri Lanka. He recalled the prominent centres of learning in the past – Nalanda and Vikramashila Universities and the eclectic mix of subjects they taught there centuries ago: medicine and mathematics as well as Buddhist studies and philosophy. He encouraged more collaboration between SIBA and the Nalanda University of India.
Acting Chairman of SIBA and Basnayake Nilame of Sri Vishnu Dewalaya, Kandy Mahendra Ratwatte, CEO Dr. Upali Sedere, members of the board of directors and faculty were present. The Anunayaka Theras of the Malwatte and Asgiriya Chapters and other senior members of sangha blessed the ceremony. The high commissioner sought the blessings of the Anunayake Theras of the Malwatte and Asgiriya chapters.
