Army and Navy bag respective Men’s and Women’s titles
Defending champions Sri Lanka Army and SL Navy excelled to retain the men’s and women’s titles respectively at the 18th ‘Vijayans trophy’ all island open inter club hockey 7s tournament 2017 at Edward Park hockey ground in Matale.
The two day hockey fiesta conducted by Matale old Vijayans sports club saw 27 teams taking part in the men’s championship and 13 teams including an overseas team from United Women’s hockey academy Lahore in Pakistan in the women’s championship.
In the men’s final Army beat Police SC two goals to one to win the title R.M. Anuradha Suresh fired both goals for the champions while the loser’s solitary goal was netted by Dinesh Chathuranga. On the way to the finals Army beat M.I.C. (Military Intelligence Corp) 4 – 3 and Police outplayed Air Force SC 3-2 in the semi finals.
The champions Army SC received ‘Old Vijayans challenge trophy ‘ and a cash award of Rs. 50000/= while Police SC who were runners up walked away with Nestle challenge trophy and a cash prize of Rs. 25000/=.
Madushani Jayaneththi powered Sri Lanka Navy women to wrap up the women’s title with a 1 – 0 win over fancied Air force in the final. Jayaneththi dazzled with her stick work to slam in the winning goal during extra time, after the women’s final ended goalless at full time.
Navy and Air Force made their way in to the finals with wins over Essens SC 3 – 1 and Seetha Devi SC Kandy 2 – 1 in their respective semi finals. Women’s champions – Navy received Nestle challenge trophy and a cash award of Rs. 25000/= while Air Force – runners up took away a trophy plus a cash prize of Rs. 15000/= .
