Teachers agitating students against transfers face serious action: MoE

View(s):

The Ministry of Education (MoE) last week said that teachers who oppose transfers by instigating students to protest, will be severely dealt with. This follows protests held by students in front of national schools against the transfer of teachers to other schools.

The MoE said the transfers have been done in a transparent manner, after consultation with stakeholders, including trade unions and teacher associations. Accordingly, around 3,000 teachers serving in national school for over 10 years, have got letters of transfer, which will come into effect from January 2018.

Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, in the ministry website, said he works without fear and that henceforth, the teacher transfer mechanism will be prepared every 5 years in keeping with existing policies. There are 37,000 teachers serving in 353 national schools, of which around 12,000 teachers have been serving in the same school for over 10 years. - CC
