The Constitutional Assembly (CA) will meet on Monday to begin the three-day debate on the Interim Report of the Steering Committee appointed to formulate proposals for a new Constitution. The debate will take place tomorrow, on Tuesday and Wednesday, with Parliament convening as the Constitutional Assembly for the debate. The sittings will take place from 10.30 am to 6.30 pm on all three days.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe who presented the interim report of the Steering Committee last month said this was not the final word on a new Constitution but it would be debated and developed into a draft that would get the support of all.

The Steering Committee met 73 times between April 2016 and September 2017 to formulate the interim report and sort out thorny issues such as how the country should be known, be it “Unitary” or “United”. The proposals put forward to the committee by various political parties too, were included in the report.
