Prof. Ranil delivers M.P.M. Cooray Memorial Oration
View(s):Prof Ranil Fernando delivered the M.P.M. Cooray Memorial Oration at the Lionel Memorial Auditorium of the Sri Lanka Medical Association recently.
Prof Ranil Fernando is the head of the surgery department of the Kelaniya University’s Medical Faculty. A Consultant Surgeon North Colombo Teaching Hospital Ragama, he is also is the past president and director examinations of the College of Surgeons and International Advisor to RCS Edinburgh. He was invited to deliver this Oration by the Guild of St. Luke and S.S. Cosmas and Damian on the subject of ‘Saints Scriptures and Surgeons’.
The chef guest of this occasion was Rt. Rev Dr. Justin Gnanapragasam, the Bishop of Jaffna.
Dr. Manamarakkalage Philip Michael Cooray was an iconic figure amongst the medical Community in Sri Lanka. He had his early education at St. John’s College, Panadura, and later at St. Joseph’s College, Colombo. Dr. Cooray entered the Ceylon Medical College in 1929, but left in the second year, and continued his medical education in the United Kingdom at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital London, where he obtained the M.B.B.S. (London), MRCS and LRCP degrees.
He returned to Sri Lanka, and joined the Department of Health as a physician in 1938. He served in the General Hospitals of Badulla, Kegalle and the Fever Hospital in Angoda. The President of the Guild of St. Luke and SS. Cosmas and Damian, Dr. Marlene Abeyewardena delivered the introductory and welcome address.
