The rowing season for 2017 came to a close last week when the 6th Annual Sri Lanka Schools’ Rowing Championship organized by the Sri Lanka Schools’ Rowing Association concluded on a high note at the Colombo Rowing Club.

In this highly competitive event S. Thomas’ College, Mt. Lavinia won the Boys’ Under 20 championship while the girls’ championship was not awarded. In the Under 18 category Ananda College and Musaeus College took the overall championship. In the under 14 and 16 boys’ and girls’ categories overall championship was won by Ladies College and S. Joseph’s College, Maradana repectively.

Royal’s Hashen Hettigoda emerged victorious in the Single Sculls Under 20 category by overcoming Thomian Arjun Wickremanayake and team mate Chamika Perera. Davina Koch and Sanjula Boteju of Ladies College finished first and second in the girls’ scull event.

Arjun Wickremanayake partnering Dharath Senanayake clinched the boys’ under 20 double sculls with a victory over Royalists Waruna Hewamanne and Ishara Rambukwella. Shalindra Jayasekera and Kavindu Mediwaka combination won the under 20 coxless pair event for S. Thomas’.

Ashvini Subasinghe together with Nihara Warawita won the gold for Ladies College beating Musaeus pair Ishanka Hewakakuruppu and Thanushi Perera. Bishops College’s only gold medal was won by Anagi Fernando and Thavishka Athanayake in the under 20 coxless pair event.

Royal College claimed victory in the under 20 coxed fours rowed over by Avishka Jayaweera, Hashen Hettigoda, Sajaad Ajmal, Prathap Perera and Charin Wijethilake. Musaeus College walked away with the gold in the girls category with the team of Mayanthi Weerakoon, Maedhini de Alwis, Binali de Alwis, Lishadi Mayadunne and Senuri de Silva.

In the under 18 races, boys’ single sculls was won by Anandian Suhith Alexander while Binali de Alwis of Musaeus College emerged winner in the girls’ event. Ramesh Nithushan and Dhaharath Senanayake of S. Joseph’s College reigned supremacy in the double sculls while the girls event was won by Madhani de Alwis and Senuri de Silva of Musaeus College.

In the coxless pairs races saw Royalists Charin Wijethilake and Lasindu Gamage emerging winners in the boys category while Ladies pair Nihara Waravita and Ashvini Subasinghe won the girls category event.

The much awaited under 18 coxed fours, Mayanthi Weerakoon, Binuri Gunawardene, Hashini Hettigoda, Randini de Silva and Thanushi Perera of Musaeus College won the girls event. Giant killers Ananda College team comprising Menula Minuranpitiya, Janith Welaratne, Dasith Wickremasinghe, Suhith Alexander and Asel Karannagoda walked away with the gold in the boys’event. – Lakshman Ranasinghe
