An impressive bowling return of 6 for 24 by Sachintha Chamith paved the way for Gurukula MV Kelaniya to record a stunning nine wicket win over Wesley in their Under-19 Inter-School Cricket encounter concluded at Campbell Park yesterday.

Gurukula MV having dominated proceedings on day one continued to keep up the momentum as they bowled out the struggling Wesley batting for low scores on the second day.

Wesley resuming from their overnight score of 42 for 3 put in a pathetic batting performance as they lost their remaining seven wickets for the addition of 104 runs — being bowled out for 146.

Wesley had to face the agony of being forced to follow-on and also had to erase a deficit of 113 runs.  But things did not look good for the Wesleyites as they were struggling on 55 for 3, midway in the second session.

But they never recovered from there on as Sachintha ran through the batting as Wesley just managed to save an innings defeat being bowled out for a low score of 123 runs.

This left Gurukula MV just 12 runs for victory which they achieved in seven balls.

The first day’s play saw Gurukula MV taking first lease of the wicket making a formidable score of 258.

Solid knocks by Shanel Fernando, Tharusha Fernando and Sukitha Prasanna helped St. Sebastian’s make a good recovery and to force a draw against Royal in their encounter which ended at Moratuwa yesterday.

St. Sebastian’s after being bowled out for a meager 66 runs in the first innings and made to follow on had a deficit of 179 runs to erase and the trio’s half tons enable them to end day two proceedings on 303 for 4.

In the two matches got underway yesterday, D.S. Senanayake winning the toss and electing to bat made 225 and had St. Thomas’ Matara in tatters with the sore on 98 for 7 at Bandaragama while St. Joseph’s helped by an unbeaten 81 by Revan Kelly dominated proceedings against Zahira at Maradana.
