Joseph’s boys and President girls emerge top performers
The much awaited All-Island finals of Sir John Tarbat Junior School Athletic Championship 2017 was held at Diyagama last week. The three-day event and came to an exciting close with St. Joseph’s College Colombo and President’s Girls School Nawala emerging Overall champions in boys’ and girls’ categories respectively.
Following the Joes, Rahula College Matara became runners-up in the boys’ category while among girls schools Sumana Balika Vidyalaya Ratnapura emerged runners-up.
W.H.H.M. Abeysekara of Siddhartha Maha Vidyalaya, Balapitiya was adjudged the Best Athlete of the Year in boys’ category while the girls’ award went to S.H. Sadini Kavisha of Vijitha Central College, Dickwella.
This year, the championship attracted the highest number of participants, which was above 7000 young athletes from 200 schools. Athletes who participated successfully in the three preliminary championships held in Polonnaruwa, Hanwella and Nawalapitiya hailed from all provinces were eligible for the final round. The sponsors, Ritzbury of Ceylon Biscuits Limited, has earned a fine reputation as a strong supporter of several sports in Sri Lanka, in addition to its focus on the Sir John Tarbat Senior and Junior School Athletic Championships. This is the fifth occasion Ritzbury have come forward as sponsors of this event.
