Timeless classics: Gala musical evening for the people of Batticaloa
View(s):Known as a surfer’s paradise – Batticaloa has seen its fair share of ups and downs over the years. To help uplift Batticaloa’s health service, the Rotary Club of Colombo East will be hosting a fundraising concert “Timeless Classics”, featuring Soundarie David Rodrigo and Shehara (Shey) Liyanage on November 26 from 5 p.m. at the newly opened Shangri-La Hotel in Colombo.
This concert is aimed at raising funds for two of the club’s projects – BEAP (Accident and Emergency Trauma Unit Centre at the Teaching Hospital in Batticaloa) and the eradication of dengue. Partnering with the Rotary Club of Colombo East for the worthy cause is the Shangri- La Hotel, Colombo.
“We will be performing a set list of musical scores from a wide range of genres at Timeless Classics,” says acclaimed music director Soundarie David Rodrigo.
Soundarie’s “Soul” singers and even veteran thespian Jerome De Silva will take the stage at Timeless Classics – for a Jerome-esque performance of music and theatre. Soundarie, Shey and a few other ‘surprise’ guests will perform songs “that have made an impression and have reached out to people”.
The event is supported by the Ministry of Health and is aimed at providing an Ultrasound machine for the Batticaloa Teaching Hospital. The remaining contributions will be donated to the Dengue Eradication Programme.
President of the Rotary Club of Colombo East, Indrajith Fernando remarks, “The Trauma Centre of the Emergency and Accident Services at the Batticaloa Hospital is to be upgraded and modelled after the Karapitiya Emergency Hospital”(a previous project of the Rotary Club of Colombo East). “This initiative is a long overdue need in Batticaloa as the Eastern Province has approximately 7 lives being lost each day and many more persons injured,” he adds.
Timothy Wright, Vice President and General Manager of Shangri-La Hotel, Colombo shared his enthusiasm in partnering with the Rotary Club of Colombo East for this worthy cause. “Embracing such initiatives allows Shangri-La Hotel, Colombo to endorse both research toward long term solutions for pressing national issues, whilst also contributing toward immediate solutions,” he said, adding “This is our commitment to the communities in which we operate.”
Only valid on November 26 at Shangri-La Hotel is the offer of Room and Restaurant especially for all Rotarians. The promotion includes a dinner buffet at the Table One.
