Lot of interest has been shown among Sri Lankan students to study medicine abroad with the majority being females, an official from a well-known foreign university told the Business Times last week.

This was on the sidelines of a media briefing by St. George’s University (SGU) Grenada at the Cinnamon Grand in Colombo to promote its campus and courses. The university’s Recruitment Manager for South Asia, Salil Gupta said, “We require a minimum of three B’s at the GCE advanced level examination in the Biology stream from students who apply to the university”.

He said: “From a pool of students who apply to the university, we select around three to four students each year from Sri Lanka. From the Asian region we select around 100 students from India, Sri Lanka, China and other countries. Majority of the students are from the US and Canada while there are over 100 nationalities in the campus. From India more than 30 students join the university each year.”

Mr. Gupta noted that very specific and well determined students apply from Sri Lanka. This year three students have been selected from Sri Lanka and all three of them are females. “We are planning to affiliate with many institutions across the globe. In Sri Lanka we have affiliated with the Business Management School in Colombo to provide the foundation course and the first year programme and then the students will join the programme directly in Grenada.”

At the media briefing, Mr. Gupta stated, after successful completion of the 5-year programme, students receive a Doctor of Medicine (MD) Degree from SGU, Grenada. The SGU MD programme is accredited in all the 50 states in the US, General Medical Council of England, CAAM-HP, WHO and so on.

The university also offers medical and veterinary degrees in the Schools of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine and independent and dual graduate degrees in the sciences, public health, and business. Undergraduate degree programmes are also available through its School of Arts and Sciences. The university programmes are accredited and approved by many governing authorities. There are 1,400 clinical faculties at more than 70 affiliated hospitals and clinical centres in the US, Canada, Grenada and the UK.
