The Ceylon Teachers Union General Secretary, Joseph Stalin said the 2018 Budget has been a disappointment, with no solutions for the problems faced by Teachers and Principals in schools. He said there has not been any mention of allocations to pay salary arrears of Teachers and Principals, in keeping with the new Sri Lanka Education Administrative Service Minute. He said there is an outstanding of arrears since 2011, yet to be paid.

He also pointed out that, “Although there are proposals to establish Medical Faculties in the State Universities of Wayamba, Sabaragamuwa and Moratuwa, and a Professorial Unit at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital, it has failed to allocate funds for badly needed repairs and renovations of 7,400 schools in the country, which is long overdue. The repairs are estimated at Rs. 4.5 billion,” he said.

He said even the Tabs promised for 170,000 Ordinary Level students and 28,000 Teachers in November 2016, has yet to materialise. “Not a single Tab has been distributed to date,” he said. -CC
