106th Annual Prize-Giving of Girls’ High School Kandy
View(s):Girls’ High School (GHS) Kandy, founded in 1879, had its 106th Annual Prize-Giving with a distinguished past pupil, a Researcher and former Head of the Molecular Biology & Biotechnology of the University of Peradeniya, Dr (Mrs) Priyani Amerasinghe, as its Chief Guest.
A premier Educational Institution in the country, it formed the first ever Guides in then Ceylon, in 1917, with Mrs Gladys Vanderstratten as the first Ceylonese Guide. In 1923, the first pupil to be sent for the London Matriculation as well as the 1st Malay Girl to sit for the Matriculation examination in Ceylon was Miss Moodah Chunchie from GHS Kandy.
The 1st Kandyan Girl to Graduate was Miss Soma Seneviratne from GHS Kandy in 1922, while the 1st Girl to be awarded a University Scholarship in Ceylon was Miss Lily Fernandao from GHS Kandy. In 1889, the 1st Lady Graduate Miss Pricilla Marshal was awarded the Cap and Gown at the then Prize-Giving. The school joined the Free Education scheme in 1952.
