FANDOM 2017: A celebration of the geek culture
View(s):FANDOM 2017, the signature finance project of the Rotaract Club of CFPS Law School kicked off at the Royal College Primary Grounds with an array of exciting and unique games, trivia, fantasy themed delicacies and the rights to the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms.

The day was full of energy and spirit, with teams competing in various games designed to be “out of the box”, literally. The Sphinx Trials had a life sized Board Game, where the participants had three minutes to roll the dice and finish the route while the organisers threw trivia questions from fandoms varying from Naruto, Harry Potter and Hunger Games to Star Wars, DC and Marvel Universes.
Another part of the Trials was a fantasy football game that had mixed teams of girls and boys, who put an interesting twist to the rules of football where each geek was resilient as their heroes.
The highlight of the day was the first ever Muggle Quidditch Cup of Sri Lanka, inspired by everyone’s all-time favorite franchise, Harry Potter. The setting was as close as it could get to the real deal, and the organizers had even fashioned the brooms and game hoops exactly like the movies, giving the participants an original feel of being in the fantasy world. It was this that all the teams had looked forward to, and what brought each of them there. Teams battled it out head to head in the Quidditch Arena, trying to get points amidst bludgers and beaters, while the seekers chased after the snitch in hopes of winning the game.
The friendly competition and sportsmanship between the teams was a distinctive feature, and according to the participants, in the geek world, this brotherhood and coming together was exactly what is to be expected. Following the audience generated by Comic Con 2017 and the booming geek culture in Sri Lanka, the Rotaractors of CFPS wanted a unique project that would not only boost the comic and geek tradition in Sri Lanka but also help the club generate funds needed to do more community service, the co-Chairperson of the project, Rtr Senal Rathnayake explained.
Bringing fantasy to life and creating an outlet to the youth of the community to experience the fandoms they grew up loving, was the driving force behind the project and was truly reflected in everything FANDOM 2017 offered to its audience.
The Club intends to finance its upcoming ventures for womens’ empowerment and HIV Awareness, according to President of the Club, Rtr Saalihah Mohideen.
The Club intends to make FANDOM their annual project, and participants were eager to be a part of the next Quidditch Cup to integrate with other geeks in a space they felt truly welcomed in; making the next event worth look forward to.
