Another tusker killed
The police last Wednesday, produced a suspect at the Puttalam Magistrate Court over an incident where a tusker was found dead near the Thabowe tank in Karuwelagaswewa area.
A post mortem performed on the cadaver by the Puttalam Wild Life Veterinary Surgeon, Dr. Chandana Jayasinghe said a bullet had pierced the elephant’s liver causing internal bleeding which led to its death.
The Assistant Director Wildlife Department Puttalam -W.M.K.S. Chandraratne- said the dead tusker had been seen only a few times in the area .
The elephant around 18-years-old is said to have had four-foot-long tusks which are now in the custody of the Puttalam police.
Investigations into the killing of this magnificent beast are being conducted by the Puttalam police in collaboration with the Karuwelagaswewa Wild Life Department under the direction of DIG Champika Siriwardena.
