Kandy residents say shopping complex will add to congestion

Plans to construct a six storey shopping complex at the Katukelle junction close to Kandy town has raised concern among residents that it will add to the congestion in the area.

They say the project has been undertaken without a proper feasibility study on how such a big structure would impact the Kandy town which is already facing traffic congestion issues.

The Organisation for the Protection of Public Property has written to Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Jagath Abyesirigunawardena inquiring whether the Police were consulted on the additional traffic movement once the shopping mall is opened. The foundation stone for the complex is to be laid today.

The organisation’s general secretary Anura Gonawela told the Sunday Times that from the inquiries they have made they believe neither a feasibility study report nor a proper investment plan have been drawn up.

The shopping complex is to come up on the land which was a former tennis court and lies in front of Girls’ High School Kandy. Residents in the area say there are over 12 schools in this area and many of them do not have a playground to practise sports. They say the land would be better served if it is given to the schools to be used for their sports activities.
