Sir Ivor Jennings’ statue unveiled at Peradeniya University
View(s):Last Wednesday a life size statue of Sir Ivor Jennigns, the founder Vice Chancellor of the University of Peradeniya was installed in the campus.
This was to mark the 75th anniversary of University Education in the country, commencing in 1942.Rebcca Sarah Caine, a granddaughter of Sir Ivor Jennings graced the occasion as chief guest.
Amidst a tightly packed crowd at the meeting in the Arts Theatre, emeritus professor Prof. K.N.O. Dharmadas gave the keynote address. Prof K.M.de Silva, the Chancellor of the university, highlighted the great service done by Sir Ivor Jennings to university education of the country and his contribution in drafting the first independent Constitution and several books on various subjects, including economics.
The presentation of a coffee table book named Garden University of Peradeniya which was developed by the university’s two alumni — Mohamed Zuhyle, former ambassador to Kuwait, and Dr.R.M.K. Ratnayake, a former ministry secretary. The book presents the rare architectural character, some of the historical monuments of the country, photographs of great personalities who contributed to the formation of the University and brief narrations of the faculties, places of religious worship and other details.
