Nimsara wins water rocket competition

A grade nine student of Christ Church Boys’ College Baddegama won a gold medal at the water rocket competition held by the Asia Pacific Regional Space Agency Forum in Bangalore last month. He emerged as the winner from 54 competitors from 13 countries.

He first invented a water rocket for a school competition and then submitted his invention for an all island competition organised by the Arthur C. Clarke Centre where he placed sixth. Six students from Sri Lanka took part in the event in Bangalore. He was assisted by an old boy of the school Engineer, J. K. Suriyaarachchi who provided the rocket launcher and facilities for him to practise.

His parents Nissanka Udaya Kumara and Ramya Kumari are self employed in carpentry work and their eldest son who is a second year student of the Engineering faculty of the Moratuwa University encouraged Nimsara to take part in the event. “As the contestants were required to purchase their air ticket and find their expenses Provincial Council member Ven. Baddegama Samitha, our principal H. W. Dayawasa, deputy principal N. E. G. Somasiri and the teacher in charge of the Astronomical Society
