Mihith, a promising paddler
View(s):Young Mahith Kausilu Jayasumana, a 12-year-old from Gampaha and a student of Lyceum International School Gampaha, is an outstanding table tennis player with a bright future. He was among the top school table tennis players and was ranked No.1 in the Under-15 age category in Western Province in 2017.
Mahith won the Boy’s Under-15 championship at the Western Province Open Ranking Table Tennis Tournament 2017 held at the S. Thomas’ College Indoor Complex in Mt. Lavinia from December 9 to 11. Earlier in November, Mahith was selected to tour to India, representing the Sri Lanka Under-13 Table Tennis team at the Asian Junior Table Tennis Championship.
Mahith is a complete paddler for his age, who exhibits well controlled forehand smashes. His favourite is the topspin, which mesmerizes most of his opponents. He has a penchant to attack the corners with powerful smashes and when it comes to defence, Mahith is solid as a rock according to his coach Lalith Perera.
By now he has earned many accolades at junior level in Under-8, 10, 12 and 15 age categories in the All-Island and Western Province competitions. This is a significant achievement for a youngster who began playing the game just three years ago. Mahith, who is equally keen and advanced at studies and in the field of music, is a national prospect in table tennis.
