Capturing in-between faces

Saahera Asraf is exhibiting her work for the first time in Sri Lanka this week. A graduate in fine arts, specialising in photography from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Saahera has exhibited her work previously in Boston, Massachussetts. For this exhibition, ‘The In-between experience’, she will be exhibiting one sculpture and a series of photographs taken over the last four years. Most of the photographs are portraits, with many being taken in Boston, alongside a few from Sri Lanka.

Saahera has exhibited with other artists at the Aviary Gallery, Godine Gallery, Bakalar & Paine Gallery, Presidents Gallery, North crackatorium, DMC Gallery and Student Life Gallery in the United States, while she has co-curated Haute a la mode (with Stephanie Chang) at the North crackatorium gallery in 2016 and Paper Boats and Rising Sun (co-curated with Anna Fujii and Illesha Khandelwal) – at the Godine Gallery in 2017.

The name of the exhibition stems from the artist’s experience of living in two different locations – Boston and Colombo. “I felt in my life that I was in between things – in between Boston and Sri Lanka,” explains Saahera, adding that her work is about many things coming together – the various experiences of life merging to create the human experience.

Today is the closing day for ‘The In-between experience’, at the Harold Pieris Gallery, Lionel Wendt from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The exhibition opened on December 15.
