One hundred Chinese couples will be married in traditional Sri Lankan style today at a state sponsored mass wedding in Colombo. The event will get underway at 3 pm at the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) premises under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The President and Prime Minister are due to sign as attesting witnesses for some of the couples. Others who will be in attendance include Ministers Patali Champika Ranawaka, John Amaratunga and CMC Commissioner V.K. Anura. The wedding ceremony will be held at the CMC premises while a reception for the couples will be hosted later today at the Water’s Edge in Battaramulla.

The Government expects that the event, the first of its kind in the country, will further strengthen relations between Sri Lanka and China. After the wedding, the couples will leave for their honeymoon, visiting places such as Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Kandy and Yala National Park.

The event is being sponsored by several bodies, including the Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development, Ministry of Tourism Development, the CMC and the Chinese Embassy.
