View(s):The Christmas Festival
Christmas is a religious festival celebrated by Christians. Christmas season extends from the anniversary of Christ’s birth on December 25 to the feast of Epiphany on January 6. Catholics and Christians all over the world celebrate Christmas. It is the most significant Christian holiday but it is not only Christians who celebrate during this season. In many countries, celebrations start on December 24. Roman Catholics in earlier days celebrated Christmas which was then known as the Feast of the Nativity as early as 336 A. D. Jesus was one of the world’s great religious teachers. He was born in Bethlehem. The shortened form of Christmas is X’mas. The X is for the Greek letter ‘Chi’ which is an abbreviation of Kristos or Christ.
It is also believed to represent the cross on which Jesus was crucified. On this day all Catholics and Christians decorate their houses with Christmas trees, mangers and sweets. At midnight they go to church to pray. Since the 19th century, Santa Claus and other mythical gift givers have been very popular in countries where Christmas is celebrated. Children like Christmas especially because they think that Santa Claus gives presents to them.
The spirit of goodwill and peace comes to all in this troubled world on Christmas day.

A field trip from school
I went on a great field trip from school to Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. The whole fifth grade went on this trip in four buses.
All of us sang songs and ate tasty food until we got to our destination. When we got there we went to see the big and small elephants hungrily eating their breakfast. Then all of us walked through the shops and stalls until we came to the place where the elephants bathe. From an upper level we could see the elephants playfully bathing in the water.
After that we all ate lunch and ice-cream which our teacher bought for us. I bought a souvenir with my money to remember that we came to the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage from school. After that we got on our bus and sadly returned back to school. This was the best field trip from school that I ever went for.

Wind
Early in the morning people go to the garden. They feel
the wind and the cool breeze. The birds are singing. When the cool breeze is blowing, I feel very relaxed and cool.
Early in the morning the trees are shaking in the wind and I feel even happier. When there is a strong blowing it will be a cyclone. Sir Francis Beaufort invented a machine to measure the force of the wind. The wind is very powerful. The wind blows to turn the windmills to make flour from wheat.

My garden
A garden is a place where people can grow many things like plants, fruits, vegetables and more. A garden is usually a place outdoors. There are many kinds of plants such as sunflowers, lotus etc. You must water the plants daily.
There are a few visitors who visit our garden. Some are good and some are bad. Some of them eat most of the bad insects. These insects are good. I dislike some insects because they destroy my garden. Every weekend we try to buy new plants and plant them into a pot. You must always cut the grass. If you wish, you can fill your garden with many flowers.
When I grow up I will have my own beautiful garden and maintain it forever.

The game I like most
The game I like the most is football.
I like this game because it is a fast game. The 22 players making up the two teams are always on the alert.
It is played with a round, leather covered inflated rubber bladder, which may be kicked or headed but not touched. It is played on a field generally 115 yards long and 75 yards wide. The goals are 8 yards wide with a cross bar fixed at 8 feet from the ground.
I got interested in football when I played for the Under 16 Football team. When I was chosen to play for the District team my interest in the game increased. I began to practice every morning and evening. When I was selected for the National Youth Team to play at the Asian Youth Football Tournament in Penang, Malaysia, my position as outside left, gave me opportunities to score goals.
As we have gained international status in cricket, I wish that we could gain the same in football too.

Benefits of having pets
Mental health is as important as physical health. We eat food, get exercise and relax our body for maintaining physical fitness. Similarly we need to rest, get mental exercises like meditation and relaxation to keep our mind healthy. Sleeping, watching the setting sun on the beach and watching the behaviour and movements of animals are yet another way of relaxing our mind.
We have pets at home. Most of these animals are domestic animals such as cats, dogs and some birds. A dog is a faithful animal which protects us from enemies and thieves. A cat is also an innocent animal which protects us from pests. Some pet birds can talk with us. We should not ill treat them. They too need love and care.
We enjoy our life looking at them or talking to them. When we watch their behaviour and their life patterns. We naturally forget our worries that disturb us. We can relax our mind by being with pets. It is a great mental satisfaction. When we treat pets it gives our stressed lives a relief and mental happiness is important for us to keep fit.

Food
We get food from plants and animals. Running, walking, swimming, playing are all actions that need energy.
Body-building food helps our body to grow strong. All fruits and vegetables are protective food. These foods prevent us from falling ill.
People who eat only fruits and vegetables without any meat or eggs are called vegetarians. It keeps our skin healthy and gives us the iron needed for the blood. They also make our bones and teeth strong.
We must eat breakfast, lunch and dinner every day. We should eat all kinds of fruit, nuts and grain. We should also take a balanced meal which should include proteins, vitamins, carbohydrates and salts.

Ruwanweliseya
Ruwanweliseya is the largest dagoba in Sri Lanka. Ruwanweli means gold dust. This dagoba was built by King Dutugemunu. It was built at Anuradhapura. It was about 750 feet in height and covers an area of a few acres. At the time it was constructed, machinery was not available.
Therefore the entire construction was done with human labour. The sacred city of Anuradhapura is full of many other viharas and dagobas. Before King Dutugemunu declared war against the Tamil king, he had promised to build this magnificent structure. It took a long time to build this dagoba.
King Dutugemunu felt that he would not live to see the completion of Ruwanweliseya. Therefore, his brother Prince Saddha Tissa covered it with cloth pretending it to have been completed. The king after seeing it, passed away happily.

Danger to mighty tuskers and elephants
Tuskers are one of the most endangered species of animals in Sri Lanka. Out of all the gigantic elephants and tuskers of the world, only about 4% are tuskers, while there are only about two thousand elephants.
Recently, I read an article in the newspaper, saying that three elephants have been killed within three weeks. Another article states that a tusker, whose tusks were so long that they touched each other’s tips, was killed for obtaining ivory. The hunters have even taken the valuable gem-like material inside the tusks to make some pendants.
Did you know that the world’s most ‘beautiful’ elephants live in Sri Lanka? Elephants and tuskers are creatures who are respected by the nation. We use tuskers to take the Sacred Tooth Relic or the ‘Karanduwa’ in processions or ‘peraheras.’ They can also be considered as Sri Lanka’s unique heritage.
Many people haven’t realized but we build our homes where elephants and tuskers are supposed to roam. They might die out if there is no food for them to eat and space to walk.
We need elephants for our country’s uniqueness and pride. Let’s protect all elephants and tuskers for the future.
