Jaffna Chamber wants its own candidate
JAFFNA – Unheard of in Colombo, but in Jaffna, chambers of commerce pick a candidate to support at local elections.
The Jaffna Chamber of Commerce has decided, not to extend its support to the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) in future as their request to nominate the former chamber president R. Jeyasegaram as the Jaffna Mayoral candidate had been rejected by the TNA.
Mr. Jeyasegaram is currently serving as a Northern Provincial Councillor. The TNA has instead nominated one of the Northern Provincial Councilors R. Arnold as the Jafffna Mayoral candidate disregarding the Jaffna Chamber of Commerce request.
In another move, the TNA has nominated four Muslim traders as their candidates to contest the upcoming Jaffna Municipal Council election. The Jaffna Chamber says they have given full support to the TNA in the past, but the party had taken them for a ride.
