Quarrel with squatters: Tight security around Russian embassy
Security around the Russian embassy in Colombo has been tightened after some youths in the neighbourhood pelted stones at the mission following a dispute over a cricket ball. Police Diplomatic Security Division Chief G.K.J. Aponso told the Sunday Times that the embassy staff had informed the Cinnamon Gardens Police on Thursday soon after the incident and a police team was sent to the area.
The stoning incident had taken place after the youth playing cricket in the area were drawn into an argument with the embassy staff over the ball that landed inside the embassy premises. According to reports, the youths were from a squatter settlement in the neighbourhood. Several attempts to evict them from the area have failed.
The Foreign Ministry which was informed of the incident also told the police to intervene and investigate. Police said they had warned the youth but no arrests had been made yet.
