The awards ceremony of the Singer-the Sunday Times Schoolboy Ruggerite of the Year 2017 will take place on Jan.25 at the Bishops’ College Auditorium, Colombo, where the winners of the Singer Schools Rugby League 2017 will also be honoured.

The spotlight will be on the Singer-the Sunday Times Schoolboy Ruggerite of the Year 2017, the Singer-the Sunday Times Most Popular Schoolboy Ruggerite of the Year 2017 and the Singer-the Sunday Times Most Popular School Rugby Team of the Year 2017.

Apart from the awards to teams for outstanding performances, there will be two individual awards based solely on performances during the 2017 School Rugby season, which will be for Best Try Scorer of the Year and Best Place Kicker of the Year.

As many are already aware Aabid Cader and his team S. Thomas’ College are official winners of the Singer-the Sunday Times Most Popular Schoolboy Ruggerite of the Year 2017 and the Most Popular Rugby Team of Year 2017 competitions respectively. Both Cader and S. Thomas’ received almost 18,000 votes and won by healthy margins close to 13,000, after a vigorous voting campaign through coupons, that lasted 15 weeks.

Singer Sri Lanka will present championship trophies and certificates to the winning teams of each category- the Divisions I, II and III at the awards ceremony. These awards include the Championship and Runners-up trophies of Cup, Plate, Bowl and Shield categories of Division I. In addition Round I winner of Division I segments ‘A’, ‘B’ and ‘C’ will be recognised. Also the Championship and Runners-up trophies in Cup and Plate segments of Divisions II and III will be awarded in addition to Round I winners of segments ‘A’ and ‘B’ of both Divisions. Each registered player will be presented with a ‘Certificate of Participation’ for his contribution as a player of the Singer Schools Rugby League Championship 2017. Singer Sri Lanka has made plans to include the award presentation of the winners of their programme with the Sunday Times at the official Awards Ceremony.

“The Most Popular ….” competition was facilitated by Wijeya Newspapers publishing coupons for 15 weeks from April 23, 2017 in their publications, the Sunday Times, Daily Mirror, Daily Lankadeepa and Ada newspapers. The campaign had a promising start and an exciting culmination, in which the interest of Rugby-loving readers was amply evident.
