The duo

In the run-up to the Fairway Galle Literary Festival which begins in Galle on January 24, piano duo ‘Amacord: The Europeans’ featuring Ivana Alkovic and  Maarten den Hengst will play at the Wolvendaal Church, Pettah,  tomorrow, Monday, January 22 from 7 p.m. – 8 p.m.

The repertoire for this programme includes Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Maurice Ravel and Franz Liszt, with a special place reserved for the premiere performance of Fierce, from Shattered Glass, written for piano duo Amacord by the Dutch composer Marlijn Helder in 2017.

Amacord is particularly happy to have the premiere performance of this piece in Sri Lanka, as part of the Fairway Galle Literary Festival. The programme will commence with Mozart’s Sonata in D for piano four hands, KV 381, in three movements. This will be followed by Ravel’s Ma mere l’Oye (Mother Goose), a charming composition written for the very young children of friends of Marvel’s. In five movements for four hands piano, Ravel has evoked the essence of five traditional fairy tales.

The premiere of Marlijn Helder’s Fierce, from Shattered Glass will be the next piece performed by Amacord; never before performed for an audience, this piece takes pride of place in this concert celebrating the shared history of the Netherlands and Sri Lanka.

The Colombo Concert will conclude with Franz Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 in C Sharp Major; this is a special arrangement for four hands piano by Amacord.

This performance will be held at the Wolvendaal Church (Wolvendaalse Kerk) in Pettah, one of the most important Dutch colonial era buildings in Sri Lanka, and one of the oldest Protestant churches still in use here.

(Amacord is sponsored by the Embassy of the Netherlands. Their travel is sponsored by Jet Airways.)

Tickets priced Rs. 1,500 can be bought online @ mydeal.lk or visit the box offices in Colombo – Mydeal.lk, 740, Galle Rd, Colombo 4 or at Barefoot, 41, Pedlar Street, Galle Fort.
