The Ministry of Education (MoE) will issue a gazette raising the age limit of teachers recruited for Government service to teach students with disabilities. “Around 730 new Special Education teachers are to be recruited this year, said Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyaswasam. He said that Cabinet approval to recruit the teachers will be sought after the elections.

He said the need to raise the age limit of new recruits is because most of those who are qualified are over 45. He added that, even after raising the age limit for recruitment, there is likely to be a shortage of properly qualified teachers. The Minister added that, while the syllabus for them has been compiled in consultation with all the universities, audio facilities to listen to books, have been prepared for students with visual handicaps.

Two new textbooks prepared by Japanese and Korean experts in the fields, too, will be introduced . The MoE will also recruit 3,000 Counsellors to counsel schoolchildren as well as teaching staff.
