No tuition classes on polls day: Elections Commission

The Elections Commission (EC) last week requested owners of private education institutes and private tuition teachers to avoid holding classes on election day to enable students cast their votes. This request came following complaints from students and parents of first-time voters, that tuition teachers are holding classes on voting day.

The EC stated this violated the right to vote, and measures should be taken by private institutions and tuition classes to ensure their students get to vote even at future elections.

This year’s Local Government elections have 716,377 new voters in the electoral list, of which the majority were first-time voters.
Meanwhile, a strict warning was issued to political parties and independent groups by the National Child Protection Authority, over the use of children for election work.

The warning came following reports of children being used in election campaigning activities.
